Dr. Basel Sharaf has served as MAFAC director since 2023. Dr. Sharaf is a professor of Plastic Surgery and Anatomy at the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Sharaf has authored over 90 peer review articles in top tier plastic surgery journals and over 14 book chapters and has lectured nationally and internationally (Basel A. Sharaf, M.D., D.D.S. - Doctors and Medical Staff - Mayo Clinic). Dr. Sharaf was named visiting professor for the international society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ISAPS) in 2025. He has served as the practice chair of Mayo Clinic’s Center for Aesthetic Medicine and Surgery since 2021. He is the co-director of the oculofacial plastic clinic, a multidisciplinary clinic specialized in complex eyelid and orbital conditions. Dr. Sharaf also serves as associate director of the precision surgery laboratoy, which is part of Neural Engineering Lab (NEPS).
Dr. Sharaf trained in Dentistry (McGill University), Medicine (Harvard), Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (Massachussets General Hospital), followed by Plastic Surgery at Montefiore/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and Microsurgery fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
Dr. Sharaf is double board certified in Plastic Surgery and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Sharaf’s practice focuses on facial aesthetic surgery and complex facial and oculoplastic reconstructive surgery. Dr. Sharaf’s research focus include virtual surgical planning, 3d Printing, Artificial Intelligence in plastic surgery and facial anatomy and aging.
